About the institute - What we stand for

Thinking about space across disciplines

The Institut für angewandte Raumfahrttechnik (IART) brings together engineering, natural sciences, humanities and social sciences perspectives on spaceflight. We unite research, application and communication under one roof.

Raumfahrt ist mehr als eine technische Herausforderung

New technologies never emerge in a vacuum. They always develop within social, political, economic and historical conditions, and in turn they change those conditions and feed back into society, the economy and politics.

These interactions between technology and society are at the heart of how we see ourselves.

Technology and society, together from the start

We don't look at technical questions in isolation. Social, political and historical perspectives come in while development is still under way. And technical expertise feeds directly into our analysis of social and political developments.

  • Innovative: We think about technology and society together from the start, which leads us to new answers to the questions of spaceflight.
  • Reliable: Scientifically grounded, independent and transparent, in development, research and advice.
  • Collaborative: We work with partners from science, industry, education and society, from school clubs to industry projects.

We don't just ask what is technically possible.

We also ask why technologies are developed, under what conditions they emerge and what impact they have.
